History

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers has been in existence since November 28, 1891.  IBEW Local Union 743 of Reading, Pennsylvania itself was chartered on May 7, 1918 by its fourteen original members.  For over ninety years now, IBEW Local Union 743 has been representing construction electricians in Berks, Schuylkill, Lancaster, Chester, and Montgomery Counties.  IBEW Local Union 743 also represents various other groups of employees in areas such as communication workers, wire manufacturers, cast electrical boxes and fittings manufacturers, sign installers, and public works employees in some of our local townships.  While IBEW Local Union 743 started with only 14 members, we are now over 700 members strong and steadily growing.

IBEW Local Union 743 also has a proud history of producing the benchmark of skilled electricians in the electrical industry with our five-year apprentice training program and continuing education for Journeymen Wiremen as well.  Safety has always been a top priority along with productivity in every facet of our profession as we strive to always be the best there is in the electrical industry.

IBEW Local Union 743 has played a large part in the construction of our communities through the years while providing a good living wage for all our members and their families. Local 743 members have historically been active participants in our communities providing that helping hand when it is needed. Whether it is helping out with free electrical  labor on special projects such as the Reading Fair, Reading Riverfest, The Goggleworks or just helping out with a food bank, Local 743 has always put our best efforts forward on and off the job.

IBEW Local Union 743 is an affiliate of the AFL-CIO and the Pennsylvania State Building Trades. Local 743 delegates are also an active part of our local Building Trades Councils in Berks, Schuylkill, and Lancaster Counties as well as United Labor Councils in the respective counties.
